FROM PLANT SYSTEMS TO PEOPLE: ECOLOGICAL CULTURES BY DESIGN
SPRING 2017 - DATES TBC
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be joined here in Spain by Dave Jacke, best selling author of the groundbreaking 2 volume book "Edible Forest Gardens" that has revolutionised the way people look at plants and their environment.
A forest garden is an edible ecosystem, a consciously designed community of mutually beneficial plants and animals. Forest gardening is an idea whose time has come. We can apply the principles of ecology to the design of home scale gardens that mimic forest ecosystem structure and function, ones that grow food, fuel, fiber, fodder, fertilizer, "farmaceuticals," and fun!
What can the ecology of forest gardens teach us about how to be fully functional members of healthy ecosystems?
During this weekend course, Dave will draw upon his over 35 years experience of working with forest systems and apply those universal ecological principles to consciously designing our own lives, our communities and an emerging culture that is connected to nature.
"As Masanobu Fukuoka once said, 'The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings.' How we garden reflects our worldview. The ultimate goal of forest gardening is not only the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of new ways of seeing, of thinking, and of acting in the world. Forest gardening gives us a visceral experience of ecology in action, teaching us how the planet works and changing our self-perceptions. Forest gardening helps us take our rightful place as part of nature doing nature's work, rather than as separate entities intervening in and dominating the natural world."

FROM PLANT SYSTEMS TO PEOPLE: ECOLOGICAL CULTURES BY DESIGN
Integrated agroforestry ecosystems such as forest gardens offer the potential to meet human needs while regenerating healthy ecological functioning in our farms, homes, and landscapes. The core of this work is designing effective ecosystem social structures within the plant communities we create. Ironically, however, it appears the greatest limitations to the full flowering of forest garden systems arise not within the plant systems, but within the humans that inhabit and interact with these gardens.
This workshop entails a deep dive into the concepts and design methodologies for creating healthy forest garden social ecosystems, first for the plants, but also for us humans. The cool thing is that, since humans are part of nature, the same principles and patterns and processes that work in designing the plant systems apply to us, as well!
We’ll engage theoretically and practically, with experiential classes and design exercises, lectures and discussions, group activities and solo reflections. The class will leave you more aware, more engaged, more skilled, and with a new frame of reference to experiment with as you live life after the workshop.
COURSE WILL INCLUDE:
